Poetry in the classroom

Glenart College is delighted to have Colm Keegan as their ‘Author in Residence’ for the next 5 weeks. He will facilitate workshops with first year students. Colm Keegan has mentored numerous young writers to award winning standards. Films he has co-written and produced with young people have been shown in the Lighthouse Cinema and have won awards at CAST national Film Festival two years running. He is also one of the leading poets involved in WraPParound, a Writing Rap and Performance Poetry programme run by the JCSP and Poetry Ireland. He is a qualified youth leader. He received The Gold Gaisce award from President Mary McAlese and was presented with the Gulbenkian Award for community involvement. This youth background informs his empowering and developmental approach to how writing is taught to young people. The students and their teacher Mr. Sweeney are thoroughly enjoying these workshops.

 Romeo and Juilet

On Friday the 17th of February third years students enjoyed a wonderful day out in Dublin to see the play they are studying ‘Romeo and Juilet’ on stage at the Mill Theatre, Dundrum.  Directed by Geoff O’Keeffe this abridged version of the play is the ideal opportunity for all Junior Cert students to see one of Shakespeare’s most popular tragedies performed live.

Playing Cupid!

The 5th year LCVP students played cupid as part of their action plan project last week. In the lead up to Valentine’s Day students could order chocolates and flowers and have them delivered as a surprise to someone special. It was a successful enterprise and brought a lot of fun to the day.

Senior cycle Options

A special word of thanks to all parents and guardians who attended the 5th year option information meeting in the school last Thursday evening. The evening, facilitated by deputy principal Ms. Keely gave information about the options available to all third year students as they head towards fifth year. Students can choose one of the three leaving certs available, namely traditional leaving cert, leaving cert vocational or leaving cert applied. This choice ensures that all students are catered for. Ms. Keely also informed parents of the variety of subjects available. This annual meeting is held to inform parents and guardians so they can be actively involved in supporting their son/daughter in making the right choices as they move into the senior cycle.

Health and Fitness Course for all levels of fitness starts 3rd March.

Would you like to get fit for Spring? A new course is available to parents and starts Friday 3rd March here in Glenart College. The course will involve using the college’s state of the art sports hall and fitness suite. It will be aimed at all levels of fitness-and none! So please ring 0402 32149 or text 086 0429455 with your name as soon as possible as places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The course is free to participating parents but a once off €10 fee will be required to cover all resources.

JCSP Digital Library

Our school has registered for the JCSP digital library which means that hundreds of books will be available to our teachers and students in digital format over the coming weeks. This is a great addition to our lovely library upstairs where hard copies of books are available for lending. PISA report 2016 has shown that Ireland is performing strongly in latest international comparisons in terms of Reading, Maths and Science and school library as well as community library usage is no doubt helping to support this excellent trend.

Midterm

We wish all students a relaxed and enjoyable midterm break. School reopens on Monday the 27th of February.
